March is National Craft Month!

National Craft Month has a relatively recent official history, though it celebrates practices that are as old as humanity itself. Every March, crafters around the world lean into their hobbies, learn new skills, and share their creations.

The Origins (1994)

National Craft Month was officially established in 1994 by the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA). At the time, the association created the month-long observance to:

  • Raise awareness about the diversity of the crafting world.

  • Encourage beginners to discover their hidden creativity.

  • Provide a platform for retailers and manufacturers to showcase new products and techniques.

The CHA eventually rebranded and is now known as the Association for Creative Industries (AFCI), but the tradition of celebrating in March has remained a staple for over 30 years.

The Evolution of "Crafting"

Historically, the word "craft" was synonymous with "trade"—think of medieval guilds for weavers, carpenters, and blacksmiths. However, by the late 20th century, the term shifted toward personal creativity and leisure.

National Craft Month was a major factor in this shift, helping to reframe activities like knitting, scrapbooking, and woodworking as vital outlets for stress relief and mental well-being rather than just labor-intensive necessities.

Why March?

While there is no "mystical" reason for choosing March, it is widely considered the perfect bridge between seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a time when:

  1. Indoor hobbies are still popular due to lingering winter weather.

  2. Spring inspiration begins to kick in, leading to projects involving flowers, bright colors, and home decor.

  3. Educational milestones often occur, as schools and libraries look for themes to engage students during the mid-semester stretch.

How It’s Celebrated Today

Today, National Craft Month is massive, supported by major retailers like Michael’s and Joann Fabrics, as well as thousands of independent Etsy sellers and local boutiques. Typical celebrations include:

  • Daily Challenges: Social media prompts (e.g., #NationalCraftMonth) where creators post one project per day.

  • Workshops: Community centers often host "Try It" sessions for everything from pottery to digital illustration.

  • Charity Crafting: Many groups use March to create "giving projects," such as knitting blankets for hospitals or sewing bags for foster children.

Fun Fact: While National Craft Month is a month-long celebration, National Children’s Craft Day falls specifically on March 14th, focusing on getting the next generation involved in the arts.
